Everyone feels anxiousness and worry at some point in their lives. If you don’t deal with it constructively, worry and stress can block your path to happiness. One way to help yourself become less anxious is by using essential oil diffusers for aromatherapy.

Essential oil diffusers use just a few drops of oil to fill your room with scent. Breathing in these essential oils can make you feel more relaxed and at peace. Here are four oils that have been scientifically proven to alleviate anxiety and stress.

Sweet Orange Oil

Sweet orange oil has a light, citrus smell. It is often used in aromatherapy to induce happiness and relieve anxiety. A 2012 study from the Federal University of Sergipe in Brazil found that sweet orange oil has calming effects. Study volunteers, who were all men, smelled sweet orange oil before being exposed to an anxiety-provoking situation. Volunteers who smelled sweet orange oil showed less anxiety and tension than a control group.

Lavender Oil

Lavender essential oil is the most popular oil worldwide. It has been used throughout history for a host of health benefits. Lavender has a delicate flowery scent, and is most often used in aromatherapy for relief of stress and anxiety. It can also help you sleep better.

A 2016 study from Iran researched lavender’s effects on candidates for open-heart surgery. Smelling lavender was found to significantly reduce the patients’ anxiety and blood cortisol levels.

Bergamot Oil

Bergamot oil is extracted from the Seville orange tree. It is often used in perfumes because of its pleasant scent. Bergamot can also be used as a natural mosquito repellant.

Many people prize bergamot for its ability to lessen stress and depression. A 2015 study by Kyoto Prefectural University of Medicine in Japan found that bergamot successfully alleviated stress and anxiety for a group of 41 women.

Ylang Ylang Oil

This essential oil is made from the flowers of a tropical tree, and is also known as cananga odorata. Its pleasant scent is often used in perfumes.

Traditionally, ylang ylang is used for its mental health benefits, such as dealing with anger, depression, and negative thoughts. Research from the University of Northumbria in the UK found that ylang ylang significantly increased calmness in study participants. A Brazilian study done in 2014 also found that ylang ylang can help increase self-esteem.

Don’t let worry and anxiety keep you from the happiness you deserve. Make your home an environment free from stress by diffusing these four essential oils.
